One of the upsides to being a compulsive keeper of paper trails is that I usually have every step in the design process for any given piece thoroughly catalogued- I find these archives invaluable if for no other reason than to remind myself how I could have done something better so in an attempt to not repeat past mistakes. I usually start the design process by looking back over what I’ve already done - recently, while doing some beginning of the year archive browsing, I came across my design and inspiration files from our S/S 2008 collection which has always been one of my favorites- rediscovering them these 4 years later i see how the path from inspiration to finished piece in this collection Is particularly clear and linear and gives a good idea into my person process as a designer.
The collection for S/S 2008 was loosely based on the baroque “calligraphic” line found in the illustrations of the likes of Cecil Beaton and Christian Berard (as well as the exuberant mood that their work conjures up) This particular group, the Wallace bib necklaces, was directly inspired by the triple W monogram of Wallace, the Duchess of Windsor- here are the 3 versions of the finished necklace and some of the steps I took to get to there.
